Youth week is over for another year. It was a little bit different for 2020. We ran a virtual week from 3rd to 7th August.

We had 3 sets of activities running all week, you can still see the details below. We had Zoom activities, Daily Challenges and Blagdon Trails.

You can look at our facebook page to see what we got up to. And the Blagdon 5k hike and Blagdon Treasure trail are still available for download.

Some activities require a kit list and may require more hands on assistance  from parents

All zoom activities are at 11am , except our Friday night family quiz which is at 7pm

Monday 3rd August

11am Origami Crafts:

Get creative and have some fun making animals, using origami.  We will be making a butterfly, bat and a frog.  How far can you make yours jump?

You will need at least 6 pieces of square paper of any colour, approximately 15cm x 15cm, (the size of a square made from an A5 piece of paper), and any other materials you would like to use for decoration.

Festival of fun

An hour of virtual games and mayhem hosted by Ben Wiggins. Catch up with your mates and join in!

Wednesday 5th August

Reaction Rockets

Join us on Zoom to Make and launch your own rocket with household items and see how high you can get them to fly. The launch must be done in an outside open space and some adult help may be required.

Take and video of the launch and send your footage to  Videos may be uploaded to the Youth Week web page and Facebook page unless we are advised otherwise.

What’s needed?

  • 2 litre plastic bottle
  • 6 Paper drinking straws
  • Scissors
  • Sellotape/masking tape
  • 2 pieces of A4 thin card
  • Wine cork (not champagne type) must be snug fit into bottle
  • 500ml white vinegar
  • Kitchen roll
  • 1 Table spoon of bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 Bucket


  • Supervise young people and use protective clothing where necessary.
  • Only launch in an outside open space and stand clear when the launch is set and ask an adult to approach the launch if required.
  • Supervise young people appropriately when they’re using scissors.
  • Store all sharp objects securely, out of the reach of young people.
  • All items should be clean and suitable for this activity.

Thursday 6th August

Madcap Science Fun

An hour of kitchen science. Using some common kitchen equipment. Younger children may need some adult help and supervision, and some experiments involve water- so please check your computer /device is safe! (Warnings will be issued towards the end of the session).

Kit List:

  • A4 paper (scrap pieces are fine)
  • Print out of the trihexaflexagon PDF- with the shape cut out before hand (see download link at top of list).
  • Scissors.
  • Glue stick.
  • Felt tip pen
  • Sellotape.
  • Balloons ( at least 3)
  • Small amount of tissue paper.
  • Needle
  • Straw
  • Long piece of string.
  • Small ice cubes
  • Piece of wool
  • Salt (approx. 1 teaspoon full)
  • Ping pong ball.
  • Glass, jug of water, and tray to stand it in
  • 2 See through disposable plastic cups ( inside of the yeo valley yoghurt pots is ideal).
  • Glass  bowl (mixing bowl is ideal)
  • Small empty 500ml plastic bottle
  • 100ml vinegar
  • 3 teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda
  • A coin, a playing card or similar.


  • Supervise young people and use protective clothing where necessary.
  • Supervise young people appropriately when they’re using scissors.
  • Store all sharp objects securely, out of the reach of young people
  • All items should be clean and suitable for this activity.
  • Supervise children when using water around computing equipment.

Friday 7th August

Family Fortunes

Does your team have what it takes to be ‘family fortunes’ champions?

Each question is from a survey answered by 100 people, we are looking for the top  answers.

Fastest team on the buzzer takes control of the game.  Guess the top answers correctly and you win the round. You lose a life with each incorrect answer.  If you lose 3 lives the opposing team has the chance to steal the round …..

Enter in teams of 4 people (family or friends- you don’t have to be together to do the quiz, as it’s over ZOOM!). Please email with your team entry.  Login details and the time of your team’s heat will be emailed ahead of the quiz. When you log in please enter your team name as your name on your device. Can your team make it to the final and win a prize?

For adults and young people

Pull up the sofa and join in some friendly competition. Test your general knowledge with a family quiz night, including a faces, quotes and music round.  Which is the most knowledgeable family in the BBYW area???   Paper and pen required.

Daily Challenges

Daily Challenges

Follow the instructions for the individual challenges- you can do them at any time but please only email in your pictures/ answers/ creations on the relevant day (except the sprint challenge which is running (!) all week). One type of challenge per email with the relevant subject heading please, and your child’s name and age. Unless you tell us otherwise your pictures and videos may be uploaded to our facebook page. Some challenges have a prize for the overall winner. Do get together and do them with a friend, but please follow current social distancing guidelines.


All Stars Sprint ChallengeMonday 3rd -7th August

If you are quick off the mark and speed is your strength, then sign up for this challenge and show Blagdon what you are made of!!

The sprint challenge will take place by Blagdon tennis courts starting at the corner of the footpath which leads down to the church. The finish line is at the top of the footpath by the monkey bars and top gate. Both points will be clearly identified when you arrive.

Please send your sprint time and video evidence to titled ‘sprint challenge’. These will then be uploaded onto our facebook page unless we are advised otherwise by you.

A leader board will be created and placed on the Blagdon and Butcombe Youth Week website and facebook page for all to see:

Attempts at this challenge are unlimited and will continue until Friday when the winner will be announced and a small prize given.

Youth Week – day in the life movie challenge .

Send us a 5 second video of anything you get up to during the day. It could be you saying a famous movie quote, your dog barking, you dancing, or just you running through a field. We’ll edit all the clips together to make our very own youth week movie.

Virtual water fight 

Join the first ever Blagdon Virtual water fight, you will need to film yourself having water thrown at you from the right hand side and then throw some water to the left of you, this will continue the fight / flow, email your recordings to with the subject ‘water fight’ and you will see the full water fight on Friday night, at the quiz.  Please note your videos will be shared on facebook, if this is a issue please let us know. Check out our facebook page for an example!

Lock down Poetry Slam

A Haiku is a type of Japanese poetry which consists of 3 lines which usually don’t rhyme. They usually contain 17 syllables, but don’t have to. Can you write a Haiku about ‘this unusual summer’? If you prefer you can send in a limerick. Here is my attempt :

Lockdown was so long,

Parents working, kids home schooling

But the birds  sang

And a traditional Japanese example:

An old silent pond…
A frog jumps into the pond,
splash! Silence again.

Email your poems to with subject heading Poem on Tuesday with your name and age. There is a £5 Amazon voucher for the overall winner.


Bake off!

Are you a budding baker ?  Have you always wanted to create that show stopper?

Why not join in our Bake off challenge, simply create your masterpiece, take a photo and send to with the title ‘Bake off Competition’ by the end of Thursday 6th August. 

The photos will also be shared  on our face book page unless you advise otherwise. 

A small prize will be awarded for the best baked item and the winner will be announced on Friday 7th August at the Quiz.

Photo Competition ‘Summer with a difference’

It does not matter whether you are into photography or not, this challenge is about being creative and using your imagination, capturing your definition of summer and sharing what this means to you.

You may decide to take a photo of a special place you have visited, an object which you love, a scene in nature or a person you have spent time with this summer.

Whatever you decide, please could you send your wonderful photos to with the title ‘Photo Competition’ by the end of Wednesday 5th August please. The photos will also be shared on our face book page unless you advise otherwise.

A small prize will be awarded for the best photo and the winner will be announced on Friday 7th August at the Family Night Quiz. Good luck!


Joke a Day –

Can you make us laugh?  What’s your favourite joke? Can you can get the BBYW team and friends chuckling and maybe win a small prize?  Send us a video of you telling us your winning jokes or just send the text to with the subject heading JOKE. (Unless you tell us otherwise videos will appear on our facebook page)

Naturalistic Art Competition

A chance to create something from nature, it could be a flower arrangement, a picture with a nature theme.  There are no limits to your imagination.

When your creation is finished, take a photo and send to with the title Naturalistic Art Compeition by the end of Thursday 6 August.

The photos will also be shared  on our face book page unless you advise otherwise. 

Our guest judge, Elaine Barwick will be picking the winners and a small prize will be awarded for the most creative art work.  The winner will be announced on Friday 7th August at the Quiz.

Blagdon youth week trails

Blagdon youth week trails – running all week.

Get out and about this youth week, with our 2 trails around Blagdon and beyond. Down load the trails for further info and instructions. Those successfully completing the trails will be entered into a draw to win  a £10 Amazon Voucher (1 per trail). Pictures of successfully completed trails should be emailed by 3pm on Friday.

Trail 1: Fun 5k hike for all the family – Identification Hike in the Mendips.

Follow the route which starts and finishes at The Rocks opposite Yeo valley HQ.  On the way round check out your observation skills by finding the location of 30 photos and 9 numbers. Write photo locations on the map (as best you can), write numbers answers on the sheet, take a photo when you have finished and email to with your child’s name and age and the subject ‘Hike answers’.

All the completed answer sheets will be entered into a draw to win a £10 Amazon Voucher. – Entrants must be under 15, only 1 entry per person please!

Please make sure you read and understand the risk assessment, please be careful crossing the road. If completing as a group please observe social distancing.

The walk goes up to Blackdown, and is suitable for families- or older children if you feel it is safe.

The trail can be completed as a family or by young people on their own/ with their friends if you feel this is safe. The instructions on the trail give full details of the route. Please take care  to look out for traffic whilst answering questions. We ask you to observe current social distancing guidelines.
